Why are we fighting over the last 1%?

This blog posting has a very insightful view over how consumers are letting industry run us over. It is focused on the Verizon rollout of FIOS, but the point remains the same. Consumers aren't fighting as they should, and our congressional representatives aren't fighting on our behalf. I need to read this again when I get more time. Kudos, Mr. Frankston, for a good article.

A functional suitcase bomb = art?

I'm not sure what to say after reading this post and this article from the New York Observer. It seems that Chris Hackett (who is currently out on bail from weapons charges stemming from what police found in his apartment after he blew half his face off creating other "art") has decided that the best way to express himself would be to make a fully functional suitcase bomb with a cellphone trigger, and have it displayed in an art gallery. How does this constitute art? Who could possibly think that a dude with an eye patch should be trusted?

Is your boss a psychopath?

Fast Company magazine has a quiz where you can find out if your boss is a psychopath. I'm proud to report that at least one of my employees scored me as "not a psychopath".

Disabling Windows Genuine Advantage

If you use Firefox like I do, you are probably feeling hassled by the Windows Genuine Advantage program every time you try and download something from the Microsoft website. Yes, it is just three extra steps, but I really think that once I've validated my system, I shouldn't need to anymore.

I found this blog entry which identifies a way to skip it. It uses a Firefox plugin called Greasemonkey, which allows you to add your own script to other web pages, along with the appropriate script to convince the WGA stuff that your system is genuine. Works like a charm.

Textpattern and expiring stories

I'm using TextPattern on the HesseKids website. I like it so much, I'm considering using it on the CUMC website. If I get around to doing that, I'm going to want to set up this plugin to allow the expiration of news stories.

Fonts, Fonts, and more Fonts

I was searching for a tool to display a whole series of fonts together, and instead happened upon this site. It's got a huge archive of free fonts of all shapes and sizes. Each font is also demonstrated with a cute quote or witticism. Next time I need a special font, I'm looking there!

Pix of the kids... finally...

Well after much deliberation and many false starts, I finally created a website where I can post pictures of Marie and Brian to share with the world. The website is http://hessekids.com.

I installed Gallery2 to manage the pictures, which is able to read/display the captions I placed on the images using Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0.

The website is hosted by GoDaddy. I got the domain name registered and the website hosted for a year, for only $42.
