Kevin Mitnick

For those of you that haven't heard, Kevin Mitnick, the most famed and feared hacker from the 90s, is out of jail and once again allowed to touch computers and the Internet. So is anyone else as amused as I am that his company's website got hacked?

I hate passwords

That's pretty much the jist of it. I hate passwords. There are far superior technologies and it's about damn time we used them. This message caused by the incompetence at the Washington Post which is telling me that my username is incorrect, even though I just called them to confirm what it was.

Blessed

If people ask me what my plans are for the future, I hope they can be something like what I'm experiencing right now. I'm sitting in a chair on the beach in San Diego. It's an hour or so after sunset. I'm connected to the Internet wirelessly, sitting here with my laptop and not a care in the world. What am I doing? Coding. And editing my blog. Scratch that. I want it to be just like this, but with my family here alongside me. That would be perfect.

Birdbrains

I love parrots, but I also understand how this could happen...

Why would you leave?

This NPR story discusses how Pakistanis are leaving the US in droves, rather than risk the required registration with the US Government and possible detainment as their country-mates in Cuba... Kinda makes you wonder...

Sunny San Diego

The weather is beautiful here. I'm staying at the Catamaran Resort Hotel while I'm here at the NDSS Conference. If you're lucky, you might spot me on the webcam.

For All Mankind

I highly recommend you download Windows Media Player 9. Then you can be able to witness a neat streamed film about the mission to the moon, called For All Mankind. (56Kbps version) It's worth a watch.

Wireless access

Here I am sitting near a power outlet at BWI Airport. $6.95/hr but at least it's wireless. Completely insecure, I sure hope nobody's sniffing my blog password...

Instant Messaging

Do yourself a favor. Get Trillian. Then uninstall ICQ, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, and AOL Instant Messenger. You won't need them. ICQ, Yahoo, and AIM can all be taken care of with the Control Panel. To remove MSN Messenger, go to Start->Run and type
rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

And you can contact Peter any way you wish: ICQ: 1942828 / Yahoo: pmhesse / MSN: pmhesse@hotmail.com / AIM: DangerTenor or GeminiPresident

Baby

Laura got a haircut today. I also got a haircut today. Are you listening?

Bedtime!

And yet, I'm not in bed yet! What gives? Ack. The internet is just too big. And Laura's game seems to be a little too addictive.

Deal Master

OK so I had to share my most recent theft from Staples. I saw on XPBargains that you could get this Compaq Computer for $271 after a $200 coupon code (34573) and $50 rebate. I wasn't satisfied. I headed over to eCoupons and found a coupon code for an additional $50 off $200 (79169), as well as a coupon code (75601) to get duffle bag and 5" B/W TV for free as well. Even I was impressed.

Strong Bad

OK so there's a new Strong Bad email today. If you haven't seen Strong Bad, or Homestar Runner yet, well... you're missing out. As the folks on Slashdot said, their site is a good justification for Macromedia Flash.

Banner Ads

Does anyone actually click on banner ads? I'm thinking that people that click on banner ads for one of two reasons:

  • They're tricked into it--the "Click here and win a prize" scenario

  • They're lonely--the kind of person that answers telemarketer calls and actually considers buying something

Of course I'm quite grateful for blogspot.com to be hosting my blog. I'm just thinking that they won't get a lot of hits on that big banner ad up top. Folks interested in blogging will most likely click the "Powered by Blogger" icon below, because they're genuinely interested in setting up a blog. Kudos to the Dave Barry Blog that got me started on this. By clicking the icon.

First Post!

OK, so I now have my own blog. Whoopee. Who knows, perhaps it will take over the world. Or bring me fame and fortune. Most likely it will just be a place to store random thoughts and links.
