Congenital Hypothyroidism

We have received the results from our second newborn metabolic screening test today, and the results are not so good. Brian is showing symptoms of congenital hypothyroidism. We are supposed to bring him in to the hospital for another test today. Read below for full details.

The article is scary, starting with all the things that will happen if the problem is not treated. Of course we will treat it, but it is still scary!

We hope and pray that he has nothing wrong, or that if something is wrong, we can treat it in time. There is a reassuring quote near the end of that article:
"When treatment is initiated before the appearance of clinical signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism, the intellectual outcome of the child is the same as that of children with normal thyroid function. This was shown by a group of New England hypothyroid children whose results in intelligence tests and in school performance were the same as those of their unaffected classmates."
Keep your chin (and your thyroid levels) up, Brian!

Hey! I never mentioned it before, but now is as good a time as any. Brian has a completely benign defect resulting in low thyroid binding globulin (TBG). It was this defect that was causing his seemingly low thyroid levels. His thyroid is working fine, and he's growing fine to show it!
